Chapel St Leonards Christmas Lights Switch On

Chapel St Leonards Christmas Lights Switch On

A large crowd gathered to join in the switch on of Chapel St Leonards Christmas Lights 2009. Alford Silver Band began the celebration with a melody of Christmas carols. The crowd old and young were soon singing away to the tunes they knew so well. The band was provided with shelter under the canopy of Rummages who also provided the lights so everyone could see their song sheets. Chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor Mr Michael Goodman joined with Santa to switch on the lights after the enthusiastic count down. Three local boys who attend St Clement College, Conner Tennyson, Jerome Toplass and Jake Liles were of tremendous help during the festivities. The lights burst into a blaze of colour which lit up the night sky to a resounding cheer from all.

The celebrations then continued within the Wick’d bar where a Disco and party for the children had been arranged by the landlord. Pass the parcel and other games were soon under way while the adults sampled the mulled wine and mince pies.

A raffle was held with prizes donated by local businesses. A snow machine added to the atmosphere as the excited children all screamed and cheered when Santa made his appearance. Together with his helper Elf, he stepped into his superb red Grotto and began to hand out presents to all the children. Everyone agreed a brilliant time was had by all. Chairman of the C4 committee Mrs Chris Young, who helped arrange the evening’s festivities in conjunction with the Parish Council erecting the lights, commented “The evening has been a great success and it was worth all the effort when you saw the look on the children’s faces”. She also announced that the money raised from the raffle would be divided between C4 who are fund raising for another picnic bench for the green, and local children’s club the 555 club which received a donation of £35:00. Josie Johnson on behalf of the 555 club accepted the donation with thanks.
