The
Admiral Benbow has operated for the last seven years gathering a
dedicated clientele who have spread the word from person to person
but it is still one of the best-kept secrets on the East coast
An old disused building, formerly a toilet block and first aid
room with workman’s store at the south end, in the centre
was a shelter where the public could sit and look out to sea.
The council boarded it up in 1995 to try to discourage the vandalism
that was costing several hundred pounds each year. A local businessman
created a theme pub in 1997 and with the help of colleagues in the
building trade; the idea went from the drawing board into the real
thing. Support came from the rural development commission with a
grant to help towards the cost.
All the wood in the building is reclaimed timber from the breakwaters
and groins off the beach
Nautical curios and artifacts have been collected from all over
the country, even some from Denmark.
The pub has been featured in all the local papers and also nationally
in the News of the World. It has also been on Yorkshire TV.
The Benbow is situated on the promenade approached from the village
centre overlooking the spectacular beach vista with a sun terrace
and the biggest family beer garden in the world – the beach!
In May 2004 Paul and Gillian bought the Admiral Benbow as having
been customers themselves they could no longer resist its charms.
With over 60 years of business experience between them they set
about revitalizing and uplifting the ‘old inn’ with
an eye to keeping the ambiance and familiar décor safe.
The Admiral Benbow is now open 365 days a year. During the Summer
